Salmon Super Highway: Haida Gwaii’s Wild Migration Corridor

July 15, 2025

Salmon Super Highway

Off the remote and rugged coast of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, lies one of the richest marine migration routes on the planet—often called the Salmon Super Highway. For those who fish these waters with Haida Gwaii Safari’s, it’s more than a catchy name—it’s a front-row seat to one of nature’s most incredible movements.

What Is the Salmon Super Highway?

Each year, millions of wild Pacific salmon travel thousands of kilometers from the open Pacific toward the rivers where they were born. One of their most critical feeding stops is just off Haida Gwaii’s west coast. These islands—steeped in First Nations history and draped in lush rainforest. Which act as a natural funnel for migrating salmon, concentrating them into a narrow, productive corridor along the continental shelf.

This route offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with salmon at their peak condition—ocean-bright, full of energy, and excellent eating quality.

Fishing for Quality Salmon

At Haida Gwaii, we don’t focus on chasing the biggest fish. Instead, our priority is catching healthy, wild salmon that are fresh from the open ocean. Clean, powerful, and perfect for the table. Our guests enjoy:

  • Chinook Salmon – Known for their firm texture and rich flavor.
  • Coho Salmon – Agile fighters with vibrant orange meat.

Because Haida Gwaii is one of the first major feeding grounds along the salmon’s southbound journey. The fish are in optimal condition, having spent little time nearshore or in warmer, stress-inducing waters.

Why Haida Gwaii Safaris?

  • Geographic Advantage
We fish where the salmon are still wild and unfazed. This section of the “highway” is less pressured, meaning fewer boats and a more immersive, relaxed fishing experience.
  • Abundant Forage
Nutrient-rich currents support massive schools of herring, needlefish, and krill—salmon’s preferred prey—making for consistent action on the water.
  • Experienced, Local Guides
Our guides know how to read the tides, bait patterns, and salmon behavior. Whether you’re new to fishing or a seasoned angler, they’ll help you get the most out of every moment on the water.
  • Respect for the Resource
We practice selective harvesting, handle fish with care, and always fish with the future in mind. Haida Gwaii is home to the Haida Nation, whose stewardship and cultural teachings emphasize balance with nature—a principle we proudly follow.

Salmon Season Snapshot

May – June Early Chinook and Coho in feeding mode
July – August Peak mixed-species migration

Beyond the Rod

Fishing at Haida Gwaii Safaris offers more than tight lines. While on the water, guests often encounter humpback whales, sea lions, and bald eagles. Between tides, explore remote beaches, coastal rainforests, and the stories of the Haida Watchmen, who safeguard ancient village sites and share the deep roots of this place.

Discover Haida Gwaii: A Premier Fishing Destination – As Featured in Pacific Coast Sportfishing

April 23, 2025

Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazine

Haida Gwaii Safaris is Proudly Featured in Pacific Coast Sportfishing

Discover Haida Gwaii as featured in the November/December 2024 issue of Pacific Coast Sportfishing. The article highlights our lodge, incredible fishing, and the wild beauty of Haida Gwaii. It confirms what our guests already know—this is one of the best fishing destinations on Earth.

Why Anglers Love Haida Gwaii

Writer Bill DePriest highlights the unmatched fishing in Haida Gwaii. The action kicks off with the first cast. Chinook (King) and Coho (Silver) salmon rule these waters, delivering hard-fighting, high-energy battles. And it doesn’t stop there—halibut, lingcod, and rockfish keep rods bending throughout the day. Anglers often reel in multiple catches, making every outing packed with excitement.

Beyond the Rod: Wild Beauty and Wildlife

Fishing is just part of the experience. Haida Gwaii’s scenery and wildlife make every trip special. While on the water, guests often spot black bears, deer, and bald eagles. On land, hiking trails and cultural sites offer more ways to explore this remote paradise.

Comfort and Care at the Lodge

After a full day on the water, guests return to our cozy lodge. Bill DePriest called it the perfect place to relax. Spacious rooms, warm service, and modern comforts make it easy to unwind. With private boats, expert guides, and premium gear, we focus on giving you the best possible experience.

A Proud Moment: Halle on the Cover

We’re thrilled to share a deeply personal and meaningful moment from this edition of the magazine. Halle, the youngest daughter of our owner, Valerie Hoperich, graces the cover—a young woman many of our longtime guests remember as the bright-eyed girl running along the docks or helping out in the lodge with a beaming smile.

Over the years, Halle embraced the rhythms of life at Haida Gwaii Safaris. She grew up surrounded by wilderness, ocean, and a close-knit community of adventurers who became like extended family. Her upbringing at the lodge shaped her into the capable, compassionate, and talented person she is today.

This May, Halle will graduate from high school—a major milestone not just for her, but for all of us who’ve watched her grow and thrive in this unique and beautiful place. We’ve seen her bait hooks, lend a hand wherever needed, and grow into a young woman who’s become an essential part of our story.

We proudly celebrate this special chapter and share it with our guests and followers—many of whom helped shape her journey. Seeing her confidently on the magazine cover reminds us of the deep bonds created here and the memories still to come.

As Halle prepares to begin her next adventure at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), we feel an overwhelming sense of pride, gratitude, and excitement for all that lies ahead.

Chinook vs Coho Salmon

April 21, 2025

At Haida Gwaii Safaris, we offer unforgettable fishing adventures, including chances to catch top salmon species like Chinook and Coho.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, knowing the difference between these two salmon can improve your success.
In this guide, we’ll break down the key traits of each species to help you identify and target them on your next trip to the stunning waters of Haida Gwaii.

Salmon

Chinook vs. Coho Salmon: Key Differences

Physical Characteristics of Chinook vs. Coho Salmon

Size and Weight

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are the largest Pacific salmon species. They typically weigh between 25 to 30 pounds, with some growing over 50 pounds, making them a prized catch for sport fishers.
Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are smaller, averaging 12 to 15 pounds, but can reach up to 20 pounds. Their lighter weight makes them ideal for anglers seeking a more active and fast-paced fishing experience.

Coloration

During spawning season, Chinook males develop a hooked jaw, sharp teeth, and turn maroon or dark olive-brown.
Coho males, in contrast, display a bright red body with a dark head, making them easier to identify during the spawning run.

Tail Fin and Anal Fin Features

One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is by looking at the anal fin rays.
Coho salmon have longer rays that extend over two-thirds of the fin’s base.
Chinook salmon also have long anal fin rays, but they do not exceed two-thirds of the base.
Additionally, running your fingernail along the tail fin rays can help:

  • Coho: You’ll feel distinct bone segments.

  • Chinook: The rays feel smooth with no bony ridges.

Gum Line Color

Check the gum line inside the mouth for a quick ID:

    • Chinook salmon have a dark, black, or graphite-colored gum line.

    • Coho salmon show a light gray or white gum line.

Habitat and Behavior of Chinook vs. Coho Salmon

Both Chinook and Coho salmon are anadromous fish, meaning they spend most of their adult lives in the ocean and return to freshwater rivers to spawn. While they share this life cycle, their habitats and behavior differ in a few key ways.

Chinook Salmon Habitat

Chinook salmon prefer large river systems and are commonly found in major rivers and deep lakes along the Pacific Coast. They are strong migrators, known to travel long distances and inhabit deeper ocean waters, which allows them to grow to their impressive size.

Coho Salmon Habitat

Coho salmon also live in coastal waters, but they are more commonly found in smaller rivers, streams, and tributaries. These fish are known for their strong swimming ability and aggressive behavior when hooked—qualities that provide a more action-packed fishing experience for anglers.

Fishing Considerations

When fishing for Chinook or Coho salmon, understanding their behavior is key to a successful catch.

Chinook salmon are known for their large size and strength. They require patience, skill, and the right technique to reel in, making them ideal for anglers looking for a serious challenge.

Coho salmon, on the other hand, are smaller but incredibly energetic. They’re famous for their acrobatic jumps and fast runs, offering a fun, action-packed experience—especially for those who enjoy a more dynamic fight.

To catch either species, it’s important to fish in the right location at the right time:

  • Chinooks are usually found in deep waters and large river systems.

  • Cohos tend to stay in shallower waters and smaller streams.

Fishing techniques may vary depending on the species and setting. At Haida Gwaii Safaris, our expert guides will equip you with the proper gear, timing, and strategy to successfully target both Chinook and Coho salmon.

What Makes A Unique Salmon Fishing Resort?

January 21, 2021

Just like the prizes they seek, the most dedicated anglers migrate all over the world in search of the best salmon fishing.

Increasingly, that has meant going to the ends of the Earth – the last unspoiled places – looking for a unique salmon fishing resort that lives up to the name. For many anglers, that ideal land is somewhere pristine and quiet, where crowds of people never outnumber schools of fish no matter the time of year.

Salmon fishing resorts

British Columbia, Canada, may not seem like the most exotic place on the top salmon fishing list. Take a second look, though, and you’ll see ours is truly the last frontier for salmon fishing. And at Queen Charlotte Safaris, we think we have a pretty good claim as a truly unique salmon fishing resort.

Let’s take a closer look.

The World’s Best Chinook Salmon Fishing

A unique salmon fishing resort should have unique salmon – and Queen Charlotte Safaris stands out.

The Chinook is the largest species of Pacific salmon. An adult Chinook salmon averages two feet long and 30 pounds, but record catches can grow up to 4.9 feet and 129 pounds. Chinook salmon meat is red and softer than other wild salmon meat, making it a pleasant and inviting seafood main that goes with many dishes.

British Columbia’s breathtaking Haida Gwaii Archipelago is a magnet for these salmon, drawing them from the Bering Sea each March to arrive in April. Once there, fishing season stretches seven whole months – more than three times as long as the fabled Alaskan salmon season.

Almost every major salmon run from the Skeena, Frasier, and Columbia River systems on Vancouver Island’s west coast must pass through Haida Gwaii on their annual journey. Cartwright Sound spends the whole season packed with salmon, giving intrepid anglers plenty to do day and night!

No other salmon fishing resort can promise virtually no downtime between salmon runs – because there is simply no place on Earth quite like Haida Gwaii. From beginners to experts, anyone can enjoy a salmon fishing resort where hardly a week goes by without a record catch for the year.

And what other salmon fishing resort also offers ample opportunity to catch halibut, ling cod, yellow eye, and bottom fish? Our calm coastline waters are dotted with reefs used as habitats by a diverse array of desirable fish. From May through September, visitors can catch delicious halibut – the Pacific’s largest flatfish – with no quota.

Fresh-Cooked, Chef-Prepared Meals in a Fishing Lodge You’ll Never Forget

Our lodge is your home away from home, including private washroom and shower with each guest room. Each morning you’ll wake to the view of golden sun on picturesque Shingle Bay. After a long day out on the water, a unique salmon fishing resort should offer a comfortable place to rest and tell all those fish stories!

But that’s not all: Every evening is capped with an unforgettable chef-cooked meal.

salmon fishing resort

From lobsters, clams, oysters, crabs, steak – and, of course, every variety of Haida Gwaii fish – each meal is prepared from the freshest and finest ingredients right in our kitchen. Years of experience mean every delicious dish is handcrafted to tantalize your palate. No matter what the day’s catch, you’ll never go to bed hungry!

And there’s one more thing we should mention about a unique salmon fishing resort: An all-inclusive, no strings attached experience so you can focus on fun. That’s our promise, and that’s just one more reason you’ll want to come back again and again. Discover Haida Gwaii with us. Contact Queen Charlotte Safaris today.

Not All Salmon Migrations Are Equal

February 4, 2020

Salmon Migrations

What we know about the habits and deep sea migration of pacific salmon is flawed to say the least. Salmon are relatively easy to study at the beginning and end of their amazing life cycle. It is the 1000 or so days in between that we have the hardest time deciphering. Lucky for us the shifting light for global awareness of this remarkable species. New and continued research by marine biologist on both sides of the 49th parallel are leading us towards some answers.

Salmon migrations

Chinook Salmon

Last November I attended the Sport Fishing Institutes Annual Policy Conference in Vancovuer, B.C. During the sessions of the day I was fortunate enough to hear a talk by Scott Hinch, about just this topic! As an avid fisherman and self appointed life long learner, scientific studies like these are exactly what I love to hear about. I understand this is not everyone’s cup of tea however; the more we know about salmon behavior, the better we can predict mid and early season migration.

All though the Hinch presentation deals with Salmon in the Salish sea, (the origin for some of the salmon we catch off the coast of Haida Gwaii) we have a lot to learn from any study of juvenile salmon. Hinch’s study dealt with V4 tagging fish and then releasing them from a fixed location to monitor the migration and selection through the Discovery Islands.

Key Findings

Some key findings that I take away from reading this study is just how far these fish migrate everyday while on there way to and from the fishing grounds. Tagged salmon moved between 15 to 50 miles per day. That is a long way for a fish that is less than 4 inches, on its way to becoming an adult. As the salmon age and start to return to the spawning grounds we see similar distances on average. Though some species migrate as far as 80 miles per day when making a short run and an average of 25 miles per day when talking about salmon that swim deep into the interior of BC.

What we still don’t have an accurate view of is the depth at which salmon seem to migrate and what conditions cause them to change depth in the water column. The salmon we catch are usually between 45 and 120 feet deep however; Chinook salmon have been observed migrating at depths well beyond 500 feet. The current science leads us to more questions than answers when it comes to how or why so deep but, I do know that I would be excited to haul up a spring salmon from the depths of 300 ft plus.

That is the beauty of our vast fishing grounds in Haida Gwaii. B.C. While the majority of the salmon caught are predominantly in the water near the wall in Cartwright sound. We are learning that the old way is not the only way when it comes to the targeting and catching of west coast pacific salmon.
