David’s Haida Gwaii Safaris Story: Fishing, Friends & Family

Meet David, an efficiency manager and passionate angler from Prescott, Arizona, whose solo fishing adventure to Haida Gwaii Safaris became one of the most memorable trips of his life.

“I first met Valerie about fifteen years ago at the Fred Hall Show,” David recalls. “Shopping for outfitters back then, mostly comparing prices. I never imagined that conversation would lead to one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

From Sitka to Haida Gwaii — A Journey Years in the Making

After years of fishing across North America—including Sitka, Alaska, and Cedros Island, Mexico—David had heard countless recommendations about Haida Gwaii from Sergio of Angler Chronicles.

When his usual lodge in Sitka turned away single anglers, David reached out to Valerie’s team. “The moment I called, the entire team made me feel welcome. They didn’t hesitate—they found me a prime July date and paired me with three other anglers. It ended up being the perfect fit.”

Fishing, Friendship, and Fine Food

What stood out most to David wasn’t just the fishing—it was the people.

“From the second I landed, Valerie met me at the airport with a hug. That personal touch set the tone. The drive to the lodge was breathtaking, and every detail after that felt intentional.”

From daily fresh soups and breads to curated drinks and chef-quality meals, David says the lodge experience was “five stars without being formal.” The nautical décor, panoramic ocean views, and cozy spaces made him feel like part of a close-knit family rather than a guest.

“By the end of the first night, I wasn’t a solo traveler anymore,” he shares. “I was sitting around the fire, swapping stories and laughing with new friends from across Canada and the U.S.”

Crafting Memories That Last

When David isn’t on the water, he spends time woodworking with alligator juniper from his property in Prescott. Inspired by his stay, he created handcrafted gifts for the Haida Gwaii Safaris crew—a set of coasters for Valerie, a carved salmon skeleton coaster for Captain Nathan, and Grand Slam of each species for the top anglers in Nathan’s boat.

“The lodge experience moved me to create something lasting,” David says. “It’s how I say thank you.”

The People Who Make It Special

One of the strongest connections David made was with Captain Nathan, whose warmth and humor stood out. “He’s the most personable guide I’ve ever fished with,” David says. “Nathan and the team made sure everyone caught fish—and had a blast doing it.”

Even at the end of his stay, the hospitality continued. “Aubrey and the staff were with us at the airport, making sure every cooler of fish got safely packed. That level of care says everything about who they are.”

More Than a Fishing Trip

What began as an uncertain solo adventure turned into something far more meaningful.

“I came for the fishing,” David says, smiling, “but I left with friendships and memories that’ll last a lifetime.”

At Haida Gwaii Safaris, every guest becomes part of the story—just like David. From world-class salmon and halibut fishing to the warm, family-style hospitality, it’s no surprise that anglers keep returning year after year.
